Indiana Award for Aspirations in Computing 2017

The Indiana Aspirations in Computing Competition Committee is pleased to invite high school young women throughout Indiana to apply for the Indiana Award for Aspirations in Computing. Their continued goal for 2016 is to have at least one girl from each Indiana high school apply.  To reach this goal, they need your help.  This award is sponsored by a consortium of Indiana universities and corporations and the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT).  Please encourage students in your school to apply.

What is the award?

The Indiana Affiliate Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women in Indiana at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Winners and their teachers will be recognized at an award event in Indianapolis in January 2017. All applicants will also be considered for the National award.  Winners receive, cash, gifts, plaques for themselves and their schools and scholarship offers from several Indiana universities.  All that is required are responses to a series of short questions about what possible aspirations they have for using computing in their future career.

Why is the award important?

By generating visibility for technical young women, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing and the Indiana Affiliate Award encourages continued interest in computing, increases awareness of the gender gap in computing and IT, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women’s participation in computing.

What is the role of the school?

Educators are asked to promote the Award with their teachers and students and to encourage girls with accomplishments and aspirations in computing to apply.  Research has shown that encouragement is a significant key to increase participation of girls in computing.  Please broadcast this opportunity among your staff, post prominently the poster, and share the Info Sheet with likely candidates. The Info Sheet describes eligibility criteria and supplies everything girls need to apply.  The aforementioned poster and Info Sheet will be mailed via U.S. mail. Schools in which a finalist or winner is enrolled are asked to recognize the student in their school and parent community through publications, announcements or a school awards event.  So please encourage them to apply!

What is the application process?

The application opened September 1, 2016. Please direct girls to www.ncwit.org/award for detailed instructions and eligibility information.  Applicants are asked to provide the name and email address of a school official to endorse their application.  This person could be a teacher, technology specialist, counselor or other school official.

When is the deadline?

Please notify girls of this opportunity right away.
